Abstract
Cultivated wild ginseng is used as an herbal medicine because of its variety of pharmacological effects. This study examined the immunostimulatory effects of an aqueous extract of wild-cultivated ginseng extract (WCGE) on RAW264.7 mouse macrophages. The cytotoxicity, phagocytic activity, nitric oxide (NO) production, and production of cytokines in RAW264.7 cells were measured. WCGE increased the phagocytic activity of RAW264.7 cells significantly within the concentration range of 0 to 100 ¥ìg/mL. In addition, WCGE increased the production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-¥á, interleukin (IL)-1¥â, and IL-6 significantly. On the other hand, WCGE had no effect on NO production of RAW264.7 cells. These results suggest that WCGE exhibits immunostimulatory activity by increasing the phagocytic activity and the production of TNF-¥á, IL-1¥â, and IL-6 in RAW264.7 cells. These findings highlight the potential of WCGE as an immunostimulatory agent.
